Citizens and Businesses Can Sign Up to Receive Critical Alerts During Emergencies

Douglas County will begin using Everbridge InstaCom™ Citizen Alert, an emergency notification system provided by Everbridge, the leading global emergency notification system provider, to communicate with thousands of businesses and residents in minutes in an emergency.

The Douglas County Emergency Telephone Service Authority (ETSA) and it's member organizations will be able to alert residents about severe weather, fires, floods, toxic environmental issues and other emergencies using Everbridge InstaCom Citizen Alert. Messages can be sent to residents on any communication path desired – cell phone, home phone, email, text messaging, fax, pager, PDA and more – ensuring that residents and City staff receive life-saving emergency information and important public service announcements in minutes. Citizens listed in the County's 9-1-1 database will be automatically subscribed to alerts by phone, though any citizen may self-register, provide additional contact information or opt out.

"We have a commitment to our citizens to protect them from any danger that threatens our community. The ability to reach all residents quickly during an emergency to warn them and provide guidance is critical to upholding that commitment, which is why we are rolling out 3n InstaCom Citizen Alert,” said CoryFriend, Douglas County Sheriff's Office Communications Manager. “The Everbridge emergency notification system ensures the 3 dispatch centers will be able to react accurately and efficiently in a natural disaster or other crisis.”

Cinta Putra, CEO of Everbridge, commented, “A robust emergency notification system is an essential tool for cities that need to notify thousands of residents and businesses rapidly and efficiently during an emergency. Everbridge is proud to have been chosen by the Douglas County 9-1-1 Authority as a critical component of its emergency response plan.”

DC ETSA Testing Cellular Towers
Nov 01, 2009 at 08:00 PM
The Douglas County Emergency Telephone Service Authority contracts with 9-1-1 Solutions to provide a variety of specialized services.  One of these services is testing the functionality and accuracy of cellular towers for "Phase 2" calls.  Phase 2 calls are what the FCC mandated that requires cellular companies to make a determination of the callers location and to send that data to the dispatch centers.  Not all companies are equal in their performance and at times towers are not sending the information.  The Douglas Authority chooses to stay on top of the program and validate accuracy and communicate problems back to the providers.

VoIP Information

VoIP is a booming new technology that provides phone services over a broadband (DSL / Cable) connection.  A special device attaches to the network and your home phone.  The voices then travel over the internet just like email.  It is essential that when checking into VoIP phone services that you ensure that the company provides E9-1-1 like location information.  If you move your device at all, you must update your subscriber record in the event you dial 9-1-1 so the dispatcher will have your current location.
